Also unveiled: the official ankara for Ikorodu Oga Day 2019

The 28th annual Oga Day will be held in Ikorodu between 9th and 16th November 2019. At a press briefing and logo unveiling gathering recently, the Ikorodu Development Association (IKODASS), who are the organisers, said the theme for the year is: “Cultural Revolution: A Necessity for Socio-Economic & Political Empowerment”.

According to the Association’s Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Kolawole Fatai, the event this year will feature more programmes and activities, including: Woro Carnival Day, tasting of local food, ram fighting competition, Ibile Dance Competition, Ikorodu Oga Market Expo and the launching of the Ikorodu Oga Cultural & Arts Troupe (IKOCAT).

There will also be a 5-a-side football competition, a fashion and beauty contest, bodybuilding contest, a beauty pageant, a mini-marathon as well as free medical checkups for residents and visitors.

And there are a number of entertainment features as well, including a music extravaganza and dancing competition,

As has been the case in recent years, and to create a buzz in the localities, this year’s programmes will kick off with a Walk-for-Fitness exercise.

“As usual, we will be going to the mosque on Friday 8th November to pray for God’s blessings throughout the event and climax it with a thanksgiving service in the church on Sunday 17th,” the Deputy Chairman said, adding that there will be an improved security arrangement this time around.

In closing the conference, which held at the Ikorodu Town Hall, organisers restated that Ikorodu has so many tourist attractions and potentials that needs to be developed urgently.

“You the members of the press will play a vital role is helping to change the negative perception people have of Ikorodu,” IKODASS Secretary said, in response to a question about why many of the sites are not so well known. “When you’re reporting, please report the good things about us. The essence of coming together to promote our heritage is to showcase all the things Ikorodu is blessed with. If you are an indigene in the diaspora, you will feel happy when you read good stories about your hometown. Bad things happen everywhere. We solicit your support in this regard.”
