He stated that the present executive is ready to make the annual celebration achieve its primary objectives of providing opportunity of fellowship among sons and daughters of Ikorodu living within and outside the town.
While revealing the theme of this year’s celebration as “Cultural Rebirth As A Veritable Tool for Youth Empowerment”, the chairman assured that the town’s cultural heritages would gets adequate time to be showcased.
“Since one of the reasons for staging this event is to showcase our heritages. We will concentrate and give time for the traditionalists to showcase and display our heritages which, hopefully, will be improved upon in subsequent years.”
“We have them(heritages) in abundance and we are ready to showcase them to the world, as well as advance them to international standard.”
As part of the new executive’s plans to externalize some of Ikorodu’s cultural heritages, Otunba Abiru announced that the association is in talk with relevant agencies of the government with the view of promoting and turning the celebration into a tourist attraction.
“We have began discussion with relevant government agencies of Government, particularly Lagos State Council of arts & Culture and National Council of Arts & Culture, with the view of exploring the commercial potentialities of our cultures/heritages and in pursuance of our youth empowerment programme.”

Otunba Abiru, while informing members of the press about his agenda, stated that the youths will be a major focus of his administration.
“The youth constitutes over 60% of our population in this town, therefore, the need to harness their energy positively cannot be over emphasized.”
“Our first year in office will be focused on what the association can do to assist the youths and curb the restiveness that is associated with this group of people in the town”, Otunba Abiru assured.
Explaining why the 26 years old celebration is yet to have a sponsor, Otunba Abiru said it was due to apathy on the part of the Ikorodu elites and residents, whom he said have withdrew their supports for the social cultural group.
“We did our best to get a good sponsor for the programme, unfortunately, they are saying that there is nothing there for them to gain which is the truth because these are business bodies with economic interests as the primary aim whenever they want to support any cause with their brands. Over time, we have discovered that our people, especially the elites,as well as associations and others, have left the organization of the annual celebration, which used to be a huge carnival, to IKODASS alone. In fact, the social night at Oriwu road, which used to be attended by thousands of indigenes, residents and well-wishers,both within and outside Ikorodu, has been experiencing decline over the years”,he stated.
He,however, assured that the present executive is doing everything to bring back the good-old-days of the celebration, while also appealing to the elites in Ikorodu, associations and residents to support IKODASS.
“We have plans to host the Ikorodu corporate community to sell to them the ideals of the association and create cordial relationship with them”,he assured.
Otunab Abiru further added that the association is doing everything possible to make the annual event a sponsor-friendly one before next year’s edition.
Also speaking at the conference, the Aremo of Ikorodu Kingdom and former IKODASS Chairman, Aremo Adeniyi Ogunsanya, expressed hope that the association, which has been described as a major unifying factor for Ikorodu residents and indigenes(home and abroad) will continue to achieve its primary objectives under the current executives.
He equally appealed to Ikorodu indigenes and residents to support the IKODASS executive in making the 2017 Ikorodu- Oga Day Celebration a huge success, while also urging the Otunba Abiru-led executive to embark on massive publicity for the celebration and ensure tight security in all the venues for the lined up events.
